For a new clay diya, check that it is fully dry and free of cracks. Because clay can be porous, test it unlit with a small amount of oil on a non-absorbent tray and check for seepage. This is safer than relying on an unsupported one-size-fits-all preparation method.

Akhand Jyot: the supervision boundary

An Akhand Jyot is a lamp intended to remain continuously lit for a chosen observance. Continuous does not mean unattended. It should stay on a stable, non-combustible tray with clear space around it and under continuous responsible-adult supervision. Do not place it in a closed cupboard, beside curtains, below a shelf, in a corridor, or where children or pets can reach it.

If the household cannot supervise the flame while people sleep or leave the room, do not attempt a continuous lamp. Use a shorter supervised lighting period or another symbolic observance accepted in your family. Ritual importance does not remove ordinary fire risk.

Where to place Diwali diyas safely

• Use a level, heat-safe, non-combustible tray or surface.
• Keep clear space from curtains, decorations, paper, clothing, hair and other material that can burn.
• Avoid doorways, stairs, floor edges and windy balconies where a flame can be knocked or blown over.
• Keep children and pets outside the lamp area and do not carry a lit diya through a crowded room.
• Extinguish every flame before leaving the area or sleeping. Never use water on burning oil.
