What is Om Jai Jagdish Hare?

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is a Hindi Aarti attributed to the nineteenth-century writer Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri. It addresses Jagdish—the Lord of the universe—and centers surrender, refuge, compassion, and the offering of body, mind, and possessions to the divine.

Who wrote Om Jai Jagdish Hare?

The Aarti is widely attributed to Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri (1837–1881), a Hindi and Punjabi writer and social reformer. Sources commonly date the composition to around 1870. Some sung versions repeat lines, change forms of address, or omit later verses, so household and temple texts are not always identical.

What the Aarti means

The hymn moves from praise to personal surrender. The devotee recognizes the divine as parent, inner knower, sustainer, and refuge, then asks for compassion, freedom from harmful tendencies, stronger faith, and a life of service. Its closing offering—tera tujhko arpan—expresses that everything offered already belongs to the divine.

How it is commonly used

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is often sung at the close of household puja, temple worship, and Satyanarayan observances. Aarti customs and the number of verses vary across communities. This reader preserves a nine-verse version and gives each verse a plain-English devotional meaning.
